Product used: LCR31 series linear rotary / LCA series linear

Objective: Customer is a world leading LCD display manufacturer. They wanted to improve their glass scoring machines for the LCD assembly.

Solution: The LAR31 is used with a diamond cutter mounted to the shaft. First the 4 corners of the glass are touched. This operation shows the skewed plane of the glass. Then the shaft tip uses the Soft-Land™ procedure on the glass and the actuator switches to force mode. The glass is scored back and forth. A set depth is maintained (+/- 5 micron) by varying the force using the encoder as a depth feedback. They also specified LCA series linear actuators as their standard units for glass finishing operations.

SMAC Advantages:

  • Find the glass surface using our patented Soft-Land™ capability.
  • Track the glass surface in torque mode. The actuator’s shaft acts like a spring with no rate change so it can move in and out as the glass position changes.
  • Monitor the force required to cut the glass. This tells the customer when exactly to change the tool.
