SMAC determined early in its development that there were key technologies it must control to be successful. One of these is encoders. So, in 2008, they began an in house capability to design and produce incremental linear optical encoders. That effort led to the establishment of SMAC Electronics Manufacturing Center (SMAC-EMC) in Derry, New Hampshire.

Why New Hampshire? SMAC realized that this low cost manufacturing region had access to engineering and technical talent that it needed to grow the encoder design and manufacturing center. The group now includes engineers and technicians with more than 35 years of experience designing and building encoder products. Today the center builds more than 65 different encoder models for internal use in actuators at SMAC Carlsbad. In the past 12 years it has delivered more than 100,000 products.

Recently as the capability in NH has expanded, the group is now designing and building all of the controllers used by SMAC in their motion control systems. They are also integrating rotary motors and encoders for the actuator group in CA.

The next phase of development in NH will be expanding our custom rotary and linear incremental encoders for outside customers as well as rotary and linear magnetic and absolute encoders.
