The SMAC Stack

On May 15, 2018, SMAC Moving Coil Actuators introduced the innovative, new SMAC Stack. SMAC mounts a series of actuators together on a single bottom plate.

This is particularly useful when the customer has a requirement for a number of precisely spaced units. (For example, in electronic assembly, packaging / food processing divert or eject, etc). The SMAC Stack allows actuator placement as desired - in terms of pitch or staggering. The stack also can be IP enclosed. Controllers can be built in as well as the Master controller that coordinates all the individual controllers as well as interfaces with various protocols like EtherCat or EthernetIP. The SMAC Stack eliminates most cables because you only need one power cable and one signal cable to stack up to 12 actuators.

And the stack is actually a lower cost approach since the number of individual parts - bottom plates and mag housings - are replaced by just 2 parts.

Programmable Micro Gripper for Handling Fragile Parts

SMAC Moving Coil Actuators introduced new MGR6 Series Micro Gripper. The SMAC MGR6 Series Micro Gripper is very light, total mass 149g, and can be used as an end effector on third party robots. The unit sells for less than $1,000, providing a reasonable cost for the solution.

The MGR6 Series Micro Gripper was developed to handle small very fragile parts. It includes the company’s patented Soft-Land feature, programmable force down to 5 grams, and two independently controlled gripper fingers to pick up asymmetric parts.

The MGR6 enables increased small part assembly - particularly of complicated small products that are made in very high quantities. Small part assembly is increasing - due to consumer product trends - such as smart phones and watches. These parts are too small and fragile to be handled by most humans. The product also feeds back what happened during the process - i.e. pick up occurred - correct position achieved - part was put down - etc.

The stroke of the MGR6 Series Micro Gripper is 10 mm (i.e., 5 mm per axis).

Small grippers are primarily pneumatic. Guides are not good, forces are too high due to seal friction, and gripper is single axis so off-set parts can be damaged.

SMAC’s built-in sensor feedback system gives SMAC’s devices, including the Micro Gripper, the unique mechatronic ability to “perform a task and verify its quality at the same time.” This would allow the actuators to quality check key processes 100% in real time and feedback the results.

Introducing the Thinnest Moving Coil Linear Motor in the World, the LCA6

SMAC Moving Coil Actuators introduces the LCA6. At 6mm wide, SMAC Moving Coil Actuators claims that the LCA6 is the thinnest linear moving coil in the world. The LCA6 is cross roller guided, increasing accuracy. Flat coils are centred between cross rollers so deflection load is reduced and rigidity is increased. In addition, the LCA6 is small and stackable, conserving space.

The LCA6 is great for electronic pick-and-place, biomedical dispensing, and QC measurement. 

The LCA6 benefits include a compact and slim package, superior cross ruler guiding, ultra-low friction, ultra-smooth and rigid guiding, programmable position, force, velocity, Soft-Land capability, and feedback of position, force, and velocity.

SMAC’s low friction guide system makes their actuators extremely repeatable from move to move - within 1 msec. SMAC’s product development group originated such models as the Linear/Rotary actuator, the 2 independent axis Gripper, the world’s first direct drive Robotic Finger, and advanced magnetic circuit designs that have more than doubled forces in the same sized mechanical packages.



SMAC Direct Drive Servo Motor Robotic Finger

At the Automate 2015 show in Chicago, SMAC Moving Coil Actuators introduced a prototype version of the world's first direct drive servo motor robotic finger, acknowledged as a technological breakthrough by a leading European technical university. It is shown here operating a Samsung Galaxy touchscreen phone. SMAC expects an early 2016 release to be shortly followed by a robotic thumb and ultimately the first true functional robotic hand capable of reproducing work done by human hands.

The first motor is a 25 mm-diameter servo "partial" motor and is equipped with an SMAC rotary encoder with 15.5K counts per revolution. It achieves a high torque/diameter ratio due to the proprietary magnetic circuit design as well as the coil design. Intellectual property rights have been addressed. This motor acts as the PIP joint.

Another larger motor, 35 mm diameter, acts as the 2nd joint (MCP FLex). It puts out a torque of 630 mNm and thus can exert a resultant force of 7N at the tip. Both motors move 45 degrees as the human joints do.

The 3rd motor operates as a third joint (MCP ab/ad). This is the joint that moves side to side. This motion is based on SMAC’s moving coil linear design and already meets the required parameters.

These motors have been integrated into a structure that allows them to operate and cover the same movement capability as a human’s finger. The structure weighs approximately 350 grams and is physically about 1.5 x larger than the average male finger.

CBL35C Series Electric Cylinder with Built-in Controller

Introducing the 35mm diameter CBL35C electric cylinder with built-in controller. The new CBL35C series electric cylinder with built-in controller in a single package enables the direct replacement of existing pneumatic cylinders and retro-fits without any machine modifications required. LCR13 Series Linear Rotary Actuator

Introducing a new range of electric linear rotary actuator with only 13mm in width. The LCR13 is compact direct-drive brushless servo motor. The precision Z-theta motion within one small actuator, providing a convenient pick, orient and place. The LCR13 has a light moving mass of 95 grams, which results in high accelerations. The vacuum-built-in shaft through the rotary motor is available to prevent dust build-up in the unit. The LCR13 can easily be programmed to control force/torque, position and velocity in all axes at the same time with feedback capability. Patented SMAC's unique "Soft-Land" function enables the unit to gently land on a delicate component with a controlled force to avoid damage of both the component and the pick and place head.

CBL35 Series Electric Cylinder

Introducing a new range of Electric Cylinder designed to overcome problems with existing conventional devices in the packaging industry with improved cycle ate, uptime, work environment, etc. For end users and machine manufacturers.

The CBL35 offers cycle life well beyond 100million cycles. It achieves accelerations up to 50G, enabling the actuators to cycle at rate >2000CPM.

Fully programmable in force, position and velocity, it can be adjusted in seconds and does not require recalibration. Precise motion control has inherent force feedback capabilities.
