To design and manufacture electronic actuators that replaced conventional pneumatic cylinders
and overcome all of the inherent drawbacks & restrictions associated with old compressed air technology. With necessity being the mother of invention whilst designing & building special
purpose machines the goal was to produce actuators that gave 100% data feedback 100% of the
time - to do work and verify it had been done. To be able to precisely control the position, the
speed and the force freely and independently without the need for any external sensors or switches. To make actuators that can accelerate at hitherto unprecedented speeds. Also to operate so slowly & precisely they could move and be repeatable down to nannometer level. To make them so good they would be capable of running hundreds of millions of cycles without the need for repair, maintenance or replacement. And to reach the Holy Grail of modern industrial automation: To be able to softly touch down on a part or component with a delicate and controlled force and to be able to take a datum or measurement from an unknown
position. This was our vision, this was our goal…

reiterations this vision & goal to design and manufacture the ultimate actuator has now been
achieved!

It is the new CA range of Electric Cylinders from SMAC Inc

Starting with 25mm & 35mm diameter actuators the range will consist of cylinders from 8mm
diameter up to 100mm diameter with stroke lengths of up to 100mm. They have been designed to accept a wide variety of mounting options that include ISO, DIN, VDMA, CETOP, JFPA & NFPA standards & dimensions. This enables the direct replacement of existing pneumatic cylinders and retro-fitting without any machine modifications being required. The electric cylinders are manufactured from high grade stainless steel with a minimum wall thickness of 1.5mm making them extremely robust when compared against traditional thin walled pneumatic cylinders. They also incorporate non-rotating piston rods as standard. They have a protection rating of IP54 with IP65 & IP67 available upon request. They also have full CE approval & certification. These features make them ideal for converting conventional pneumatic applications to electric where an exceptionally high degree of speed, cycle life, precision and accuracy is critical. Due to the innovative design and construction cylinder acceleration of up to 40G’s can be achieved and they have been designed to offer a life expectancy of circa 100 million+ cycles as a minimum.

The actuators based on proprietary SMAC moving coil actuator (MCA) technology which is
covered by multiple patent applications. They are offered with a choice of encoder resolutions from 5 micron down to 5 nannometer to satisfy a variety of industrial, scientific, motion control & QC / measuring applications. As with all SMAC actuators the cylinders have the unique ability to enable free and independent control of velocity, position and force simultaneously. Further to this the SMAC patented ‘Softland’ function is incorporated to allow delicate & controlled force when landing on fragile components. The cylinders also give 100% data feedback of all operations as standard. Due to these unique features no external switches or sensors are required to detect cylinder movement or position. This enables a radical reduction of any external wiring and significantly reduces cost. The electric cylinders also have a low power consumption of 1.8 amps & 24volts making them highly energy efficient and when compared against old pneumatic technology extremely quiet

This includes the new SMAC LDC (Low Deformation Coil) Technology™ which significantly improves performance and reliability. High quality linear guides are used to deliver exceptionally high life expectancy, precision and accuracy.
